Tremor In New York & New Jersey: Rockland County  And Tri-State Area Jolt Of 3.0 Richter

What Occurred?

On August 2, 2025, 10:18 PM, the US Geological Survey confirmed a 3.0 earthquake approximately 10 miles from New York City Hasbrouck heigths. New jersey approximately 10 miles from manhattan. They also noted the earthquake was shallow, occurring 6 miles deep.

Areas Which Experienced The Tremor

The shallow quake was felt in the entirety of rockland county, and parts of clarkstown, orangetown, and other townships of the tri-state region, extending from new jersey, new york and even parts of connecticut.

Local Responses

Local social media and neighborhood group were flooded with responses:

“That was crazy” was a tweet of a user from paramus expecting the brunt of the quake.

“Felt that shake all the way from here. Hope everyone’s okay” was another response.

The neighborhoods and x posted timelapses of the light shakes and the tremble forwards and backwards.

Outcome

In the aftermath, no damage and injuries were reported.

Authorities to the local region specifically the lapd from clarkstown confirmed to have received no damage or injury reports. Officials further encouraged locals to sign up for local emergency alerts and recommended the local earthquake preparedness checklist detailing staying away from windows and brace heavy furnishings.

Why It Matters: The Ramapo Fault Zone

This specific event demonstrates the Ramapo Fault Zone still poses a palpable hazard, which is an official fault system exceeding 185 miles in length crossing through NY, NJ, and PA. While quakes in the area are uncommon, tremors in the eastern United States tend to be more widely felt due to older, colder rock formations here. Because of that, even a 3.0 magnitude tremor could be felt far and wide.

Bigger Picture: Past Earthquakes & Patterns

In April 2024, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake based in New Jersey rattled the tri-state area, felt by an estimated 42 million people, marking the strongest earthquake in the region since 1884. It is also an event that triggered aftershocks, which is what eventually led seismologists to discover potential unmapped fault lines in and around Paramus and as far north of the area.
