Wildfires Sweep Through North Carolina: Evacuations and Emergency Responses

In early March 2025, North Carolina faced a series of wildfires that led to widespread evacuations and emergency responses. Dry and windy conditions exacerbated the situation, making firefighting efforts challenging.

Polk County Wildfire Prompts Evacuations

In Polk County, a significant wildfire erupted between the communities of Tryon and Saluda, approximately 40 miles south of Asheville. The blaze, spanning between 400 to 500 acres, was ignited by a downed powerline along US Highway 176. The fire rapidly ascended the mountain, threatening multiple structures and prompting officials to set up an emergency shelter. Fire departments from Saluda and Tryon, along with personnel from the North Carolina Forest Service and neighboring counties, collaborated to combat the fire, which remained uncontained as of Saturday night.

Statewide Fire Incidents and Responses

The North Carolina Forest Service reported that on February 28, 2025, 87 wildfires burned approximately 135.4 acres on private and state-owned land. These incidents highlight the persistent wildfire risks in the region.
